San Juan in Valencia: Your Guide to the Most Magical Night of Summer

San Juan Night in Valencia is a celebration that transforms the beaches into a spectacle of fire, laughter, and ancient rituals, marking the official start of summer with a unique energy.

Everyone talks about it because it combines the best of Valencia, bringing together bonfires, jumping over flames to make wishes, nighttime swims in the Mediterranean, and a festive atmosphere that unites families, friends, and strangers until dawn. You can’t ask for much more.

If you’re planning to celebrate June 23, this guide takes you through all the plans you can’t miss, the tips you need to follow, and any other ideas you can think of to spend the shortest night of the year.

What Is San Juan Night and What Are We Really Celebrating?

San Juan Night commemorates the birth of Saint John the Baptist, but its roots are pagan, as it celebrates the summer solstice on the shortest night of the year. Of Celtic and pre-Christian origin, the bonfires purify with their smoke, ward off evil spirits, and fertilize the fields.

In Valencia, it’s celebrated on the beaches where small bonfires are lit, you jump over them seven times making a wish, papers with worries or desires are burned, and at midnight there’s a ritual swim in the sea jumping seven waves backward for good fortune.

It’s an inclusive celebration where families set up bonfires in the afternoon with kids, young people bring music and beers, and everyone ends up dancing. The City Council distributes 25 tons of free firewood from municipal pruning, garbage bags, and monitors with 700 personnel. In 2026, with an official holiday, crowds are expected, but organized and safe.

Where San Juan Is Celebrated in Valencia and How to Experience It Like a Local

Valencia moves to the northern beaches, with Malvarrosa and Cabanyal as the epicenters of the party. The beaches are open from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM, with firewood distribution at 9 points from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about your car because you have 24-hour public transport.

Malvarrosa: The Party Epicenter

The star beach, from the Delfines esplanade to Hotel Neptuno. Thousands of bonfires light up the sand, with music from speakers, improvised stalls, and a young vibe. Arrive at 8:00 PM to have dinner on the beach and get a good spot; jump the fire at 11:00 PM when it gets going.

Cabanyal-Canyamelar: Authentic and Neighborhood

More fishing neighborhood, fewer tourists. Bonfires on Cabanyal beach with the smell of homemade paella and spontaneous street parties. Perfect for chatting with locals and experiencing it like one of them. Timing: For perfect timing, have dinner at 7:00 PM and head to the bonfire at 10:00 PM.

Other Beaches and How to Get Around

There are also other spots like Patacona, quieter and only in permitted areas, Las Arenas, nearby and busy, or El Saler, more chill and natural. The best way to move between beaches and parties is the EMT lines or the night Metrovalencia.

San Juan Bonfires in Valencia: Rules, Safety, and What You Need to Know

There are bonfires, yes, but safety comes first. Everything is controlled, they can only be made in Malvarrosa and Cabanyal with official firewood, treated wood, pallets, and plastic are prohibited. You can’t bring glass bottles, private fireworks, or bonfires on other beaches under fines of up to €750.

The celebration has massive security with a deployment of police, firefighters, and civil protection. There’s also a command post at Delfines and four purple points.

The process to follow is that the bonfire must be put out at 4:00 AM with sand and water. And we also recommend you watch kids around the fire, respect the distance from bonfires, and above all clean your area.

Practical Tips to Enjoy San Juan in Valencia Without Stress

The ideal schedule to enjoy this celebration is to have dinner early, around 7:00 PM and be ready for the bonfires at 9:00 PM, then a purifying swim at midnight, followed by partying until 4:00 AM.

We recommend you bring old clothes, swimsuit, and towel. And in case you want to make a wish or remember one at the last minute, bring paper and pen. It’s also important to bring a garbage bag and remember that you can’t bring glass.

To get around, the best option is public transport, whether by bus or metro because both run 24 hours. Another option is to go by bike, but we don’t recommend going by car because parking will be chaos.

If you still don’t know what to have for dinner, there are varied options like paella at a nearby beach bar, a sandwich, or something light but filling at your apartment.

Finally, a plan B if you get overwhelmed by the crowds is to go to any bar in the area or to events organized by hotels. Much quieter, but equally interesting.

We suggest making an itinerary starting Monday the 22nd exploring the beach, having dinner, and getting to know the area, followed by Tuesday the 23rd picking up firewood at Malvarrosa at 5:00 PM, having an early dinner at a bar, and then heading to the bonfires. Wednesday the 24th you can have a recovery plan at your apartment or lie on the beach.
